Dr. B's Geeksploitation Interview with MSNBC's "The Site"

Licensed Marriage & Family Psychotherapist Discusses Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Effects of Worker Exploitation in the Silicon Workplace

Chronic Stress Formula

Chronic Anxiety + Chronic Fear + Chronic Fatigue + Chronic Malnutrition = Chronic Stress

Can Lead to:

Depression, panic attacks, physical illness, chronic pain, irritability, social withdrawal, emotional withdrawal, reduced communication, feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness, marital and/or relationship discord & problems, increased likeliness of alcohol & drug abuse or full blown chemical dependency, and numerous other compulsive behavior including gambling, shopping, overeating, sexual preoccupation/acting out, to name a few.

bulletInterview with "The Site"
bulletFirst of all, I must say that while I have not been a "regular" on any interview circuit, I found the staff of "The Site" to be professional, courteous, truly interested in a summary of my professional experiences and very conscious not to abuse my willingness to provide them with time out of my clinical practice schedule. My wife's bottom line criteria for whether to ever serve a particular dish again is "When would you like me to make this again?" So, the answer is: "Guys, you can come down to Cupertino and interview me again anytime you like!"
bulletOne Necessary Correction
bulletDespite my good feelings and impressions regarding "The Site" personnel, they did make one error which I MUST correct right away; that is, I am NOT a clinical psychologist as the story board reads, but I am a licensed Marriage, Family & Child Counselor who also happens to hold both a Masters of Science and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. I make this correction, since it is very important in my profession to never misrepresent one's self nor allow anyone else to do so. If you'd like to know more about me or my professional career of more than twenty years, please see my Curriculum Vitae listed on my main page of ShrinkTank Web Site.

bulletTurning the Tide
bulletCorrect what you can! You have control over your diet, your willingness to exercise, what time you get to sleep or at least to bed at night (or day depending upon your schedule). You need to take that control back and exercise it (no pun intended)!! There ARE many things about your life and your work that you can not control and to further put your energy to struggling with those issues, people, etc. will only worsen your stress.

bulletFacing Your Fears & Yourself
bulletMost people I have met in my clinical practice were driven to suicide attempts, marital discord, addiction, and severe compulsivity out of FEAR. To deal with your stress, particularly in the work place, you MUST confront YOUR FEARS. This will be different for each person, but most common are fears of job loss, status loss, money/power loss, self-esteem loss.

bulletSeeking Empowerment
bulletOnce you understand what is stoking the furnace of FEAR in your life, you are well on your way to making choices about how to approach a change. I do advise talking with your family, friends, or in some cases a professional at length. You are NOT alone with these feelings and this FEAR; these feelings and FEARS are running rampant in the work world today. And finally, words of wisdom and promise from another era, "...your healing begins when you risk moving out of isolation...". This is essential, since emotional and social isolation are a very large problem in our society today! You are NOT alone!
