March is DVT prevention month.  This disease process is very personal for me, since I spent nine days in the hospital cardiac care unit over the holidays (2004-05), suffering from DVT, with blood clots to both of my pulmonary arteries.  Quick work by my nurse wife and my family doctor saved me from becoming a fatality.  Did you realize how many people die from DVT each year?  How would you like a simple checklist to determine your risk for this killer?  This excellent site will help you become informed, determine your risk and take appropriate action so you don't become a statistic!

During my last three years attending San Francisco State University, in San Francisco, CA, I worked swing shift at Laguna Honda Hospital, a city/county geriatrics (primarily) hospital/skilled nursing facility. I believe I learned more about people, suffering, hope and psychology during these years than from the texts at SFSU. I gained an insight that comes only from up close and
personal experience as well as a perspective and appreciation for truly quality care for seniors. (See description in green below)

For this reason, I list as my March-April Featured Site, St. Simeon's Episcopal Home (see description below). A patient of mine recently helped her family place her mother in this facility and upon hearing of her experience, I was moved to tears. Levels of care, genuine interest in each senior, and the multitude of services offered simply amazed me. So, this is a site and a facility that merits my Featured Site and I encourage you to investigate it if you are in the middle of confronting this life issue!

"St. Simeon's Episcopal Home was founded in 1960 as a tax exempt 501(c)(3) charitable organization by Dr. Edward Eckel, then Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, Tulsa, Oklahoma and the Episcopal Church Women of Oklahoma. Their goal was to create a retirement community where men and women of all faiths could live independently and with dignity." - Quote
from St. Simeon's site.
