Famous Dads and Their Daughters: The Importance of the Father-Daughter Relationship

There is no doubt of the power of the father daughter relationship. More and more, research has proven that there is a strong need for girls to have a positive male role model in their life. Here are a few suggestions of how fathers can play an important part in their child’s life and examples of famous Dads who do just that.

Set the groundwork for your relationship early and it will last.

Tim McGraw is the parent to three teenage daughters. In several interviews he has voiced the importance of building a strong relationship with his girls when they were younger and maintaining that involvement as they grow. He has shared that as his daughters become more independent, he has learned to take a step back to let them make their own choices, but is still there if and when they need him. Set the expectations early that you will always be there for your daughter. Ask her questions, listen to what she has to say. If you are having conversations when she is four, it will likely continue when she’s fourteen.

No matter how busy you are, make time for them

President Obama has often shared how important he views his relationship with his daughters Malia and Sasha. He discussed how he focuses on making time for each of his daughters and attending their sporting events. Although his time is often limited, he makes it a priority to spend time with them and ask them daily how their day has been. Making time can be difficult with busy schedules, but it’s important to make that time. Even if it’s 15 minutes a day, this time can serve as a way to reconnect with your child and let them know you are there.

Being There for the Good and Bad

Lionel Richie has been a solid source of support for his daughter Nicole. He has shared through many interviews the importance of being there for your child throughout. A father is always there for their child and loves them through the good and the bad. Parenting involves being there through the good times and especially through the bad. Let your daughter know you will always be there.

Set a Good Example

Brendan Fahr from CSI has discussed the importance of being a good male role model in his daughter’s life. In interviews he shared that it’s important that the words he says and the actions he takes reflect what he wants his daughter to see. He shared that he wants his daughter to know that there are good guys and people in the world by being one of them. Set the good example. Be aware of the comments and actions that you make. Remember, your daughter is watching.

Have Fun Together

Eli Manning has shared that he enjoys spending time with his three daughters. While he is often quiet about his family life, he does share his joy of being a father and the simple fun of making time to play with his children. Play and having fun is so important. Make sure you have fun with your daughter. Teach her how to change a tire, throw a football and play games. Just have fun.

These are just some of the many important ways fathers and father figures can be involved in their daughter’s life.

Do you have an awesome dad that you would like to tell us about? We would love to hear your story!

A few of the Shrink Tank contributors have made it their mission to help fathers understand just how important their relationship with their daughter is. We want to show them that through a close, encouraging relationship they can help their daughters navigate some of life’s most difficult challenges. The first step in sparking a movement for positive father-daughter relationships is making an inspiring documentary, A Voice That Carries. Check out the trailer for the documentary below! We ask that you please help us make this possible by spreading the word about this inspiring film and donating to the project.
