Anyone else feeling a bit depressed lately? Well, according to Dr. Deborah Serani, this is to be expected. With all the negative and threatening media going around on basically every medium possible these days, experiencing anxiety and hopelessness is virtually unavoidable. Dr. Serani states, “Fear-based news stories prey on the anxieties we all have and then hold us hostage.” We end up hearing messages like, “If you don’t use this specific bug spray, and reapply every three minutes, then you will get Zika…If you feed your child this type of food, they will fail high school and lose at life…If you do/don’t vote for this presidential candidate, then the world is ending…” I’m having heart palpitations just writing these albeit exaggerated, but not that far off, examples.
The psychologist goes on to explain why news programming has taken to these scare-tactics in their reporting…I’ll give you one gue$$ (Click here to read). But what I hope you are hearing is that if you are a bit freaked out after watching CNN or Fox News, or after reading a political rant on social media, you are not alone.
Basically, I’m needing some good. I want to read something that doesn’t make me want to kidnap family and friends to live on some untraceable compound. I need some encouragement, people! I bet you could use some, too.
Kid President can help!
Have you heard of Kid President? If you haven’t, stop reading immediately, and watch this video for the best introduction ever:
I mean, seriously, this kid is awesome. Robby Novak, also known as “Kid President,” is a 12 year old kid from Tennessee. He’s a pretty ordinary preteen with a desire to join Brad, his brother-in-law, in the mission to “change the world” for the better. Brad and Robby have filmed and posted over 100 videos on YouTube, all with the goal of encouraging kids (and adults) to make a positive difference in this world using the great talents they naturally have. But what makes Robby even more inspiring is that he has a brittle bone disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta. This kid has broken over 70 bones in his body, and here he is encouraging us all to stop complaining, help others, and believe in each other. Just visiting the Kid President website gives me hope for the future.
Here is their latest video in honor of the 4th of July:
Enjoy!
And whenever you start to get that aching feeling in your stomach, like the whole planet earth is going to implode upon itself, go watch Kid President give Rainn Wilson the best interview you will ever see.
